The Impact of a Serious Clinical incident involving a nasogastric tube
Recently Stephen Thorpe spoke to Deahna Visscher about her families experience of losing her son Grant a clear reminder of why we do what we do.
Recently we released the story of the events that inspired the development of NGPOD by Sean Thomas. Fortunately for Shaun and his family, there were no adverse effects from the NGT confirmation methods he observed while his daughter was in hospital despite the anxiety they caused caregivers. Still, too often, there are terrible consequences.
In this new video, Stephen Thorpe, NGPOD's Executive Chairman, speaks to Deahna Visscher about the tragic events surrounding the death of her son Grant after a nurse used a misplaced nasogastric tube to administer medications.
Despite much publicity, guidance, and effort for patient safety groups and clinicians nasogastric tube-related serious incidents, #Neverevents in the UK continue to rise. These avoidable tragedies affect both children and adults who receive nutrition, hydration and medications through a nasogastric tube are caused in part at least by traditional methods of placement confirmation that are unreliable or are associated with multiple human factor risks.
It is stories like Deahna's that constantly inspire the team at NGPOD to continue our mission to save lives one nasogastric tube position test at a time.
