We are proud to announce our successful application in the ‘SME support to evaluate innovative medical technologies: round 2’ competition. The project, which will include clinical evaluations of our nasogastric feeding tube placement confirmation device at several NHS Hospitals, will run over a one-year period.
Royal Preston Hospital is the first NHS site in line to trial the NGPOD, in partnership with the Centre for Health Research & Innovation NIHR Lancashire Clinical Research Facility at Lancashire Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The study will compare the current first-line pH testing method for confirming the correct placement of a nasogastric feeding tube with the NGPOD test, which gives the clinician an unambiguous yes (safe to feed) or no (do not feed) result.
The NGPOD device which confirms the correct placement of a nasogastric tube (NGT) has the potential to improve patient safety and could offer the NHS cost savings through reducing the amount of unnecessary and expensive x-rays used to confirm correct placement of an NGT. X-rays are currently ‘gold standard’ in the UK, however 45% of Never Events, associated with misplaced nasogastric tubes, are actually caused by x-ray misinterpretation.
Comment from NGPod's Stephen Thorpe
Stephen Thorpe, CEO of NGPod Global said “The investment provided by Innovate UK will bring us one step closer to placing our much-needed medical device into the hands of clinicians. The issue of nasogastric tube misplacement is a global one hence why resolving such errors is prioritised on the NHS Never Event List. We all accept that when we have a surgical procedure in hospital there are risks but to die or be seriously injured just through being fed is hard to come to terms with.”
